When is Splash UNC Spring 2020? Saturday, April 4th.
How much does it cost to attend Splash? – $20 per student. You may purchase a Splash UNC t-shirt for an extra $10. Financial aid is available for all students who request it.
What provided with the program fee? – All classes, course materials, and a pizza (gluten free or traditional) lunch will be provided for students.
Can I receive a financial aid scholarship if I can’t afford the program fee? – Yes! If you qualify for free or reduced lunch, you can submit a financial aid application when you register on the student registration portal.
What classes are being offered? – Class descriptions can be found in “About,” drop down in the navigation bar under “Past Course Catalogs.”
Do I have to attend the program for the whole day? – We recommend that you attend the program for the whole day. If you have to come late or leave early, you must check-in with a volunteer at the Help Desk located in Dey 205 Hall.
How many students attend Splash? – We anticipate around 600 students each semester.
Can parents attend Splash UNC with students? – While parents cannot attend classes with students, we offer Guardian programming available at no additional charge with no advanced sign up required.
Can I drive myself and my friends/siblings to Splash UNC? – If your parents say it’s okay (and you can legally drive that many people), yes. Just make sure you each bring your signed waiver with you.
Can I bring my phone? – Yes. Just be sure to put it on vibrate or silent during classes or walk-in activities.

For High School Parents
Why should my child attend Splash UNC? – Splash UNC provides a unique opportunity for high school students to explore UNC-Chapel Hill in a non-traditional way. Rather than attending a typical college tour, students can learn from actual UNC students about subjects they’re interested in and learn about UNC in a personal way.

Is Splash UNC a 2-day program? – No, Splash UNC occurs for just one day, always on a Saturday.
How much does it cost to attend Splash? – $20 per student. You may purchase a Splash UNC t-shirt for an additional $10.

Do you accept cash, check, or credit card? – We accept credit card payments in advance on the website. We also accept cash and checks made out to “Splash UNC” on the day of the program. Paying online with your credit card is secure and will expedite your check-in.

Will transportation be provided? – No, we do not provide transportation to or from Splash UNC.

What if I am unable to pick up my child after the program? – If you cannot pick up your child, tell a Splash UNC volunteer who will be picking up your child at check-in. Also, write the full name and phone number of who will be picking your child up on the liability form.
Can my child drive themselves and their friends to Splash UNC? – Yes, students can drive themselves, so long as they bring their signed waivers and form of payment on the day of Splash and are of legal driving age.
My child has an allergy/dietary restriction. Do I need to pack them a bag lunch? – We offer gluten-free pizza and fruit as an alternative lunch option. Students may bring their own food if they wish.
Can my child bring their cell phone? – Yes, cell phones are allowed. However, it is recommended that students do not use their phones during class.
Will attending Splash UNC help my child get into UNC-Chapel Hill? – Splash UNC is not affiliated with the UNC Office of Undergraduate Admissions, so participating in the program will not help or hinder your child’s chances of being accepted to the school.
For Volunteer Teachers
Where do I register to teach? – Select “Teacher” under “Register” in the navigation bar.
What can my class be about? – Classes can be about anything you are passionate about. All that is required is that the content is appropriate for high school students.
How many class sections am I required to teach? – Teachers are required to teach at least two class sections and can teach up to six.
What times are class blocks? – See the “Event Logistics” page under “Learn More” in the navigation bar.
How long are classes? – Each class block is 45 minutes. You can teach a 45 minute class or a 1 hour and 40 minute double-length class.
How many students will be in my class? – You can choose how large your class will be. We ask you offer a class that is no smaller than 10 students. Classes can be held in lecture halls which can hold hundreds of students.

How do I request a certain room to teach in? – On the teacher registration portal, there is a field for room requests.
Can I co-teach with a friend? – Yes, you may co-teach a class. We ask that you have all co-teachers added to your class by the time teacher registration closes. A class can have maximum three co-teachers.
Can I be reimbursed for purchases I make to teach my class? – Yes, teachers can be reimbursed for purchases but purchases must be approved by the Teacher Experience team. We budget up to $30 in purchases for each class.
When and where do I check-in? – Teachers should check-in 45 minutes before their first class in order to set-up their classroom, and receive materials from our admin. Check-in occurs in Dey room 205.
What if I cannot attend the teacher training workshop? – Teachers must complete the required training to teach for Splash UNC under university policy. Make up training materials will be provided if you cannot attend.

Can I register a group of students together? – Yes, entire schools or programs can attend Splash UNC together. Students must register individually to select their own unique schedules, but schools can sponsor a group of their students collectively. Please contact us to assist in coordinating and to expedite check-in and payment.
How many students can register for a single Splash UNC program? How many can receive financial aid scholarships? – The number of student registrants is only limited by the number of seats offered in that semester’s classes. There is no limit to the number of students who can receive financial aid scholarships. All students on free or reduced lunch programs are eligible for aid.
What types of students would be a good fit for Splash UNC? – All students in grades 9 through 12 or equivalent home school grades can attend Splash UNC.
If a student has a learning disability or some other condition, can they attend Splash UNC? – Yes, all students are welcome. Feel free to contact us if there are special circumstances that we need to be aware of.
If a student has participated in another Splash UNC program before, can they return? – Yes! Whether they previously attended a Splash program at another university or even at UNC, they are absolutely welcome back!
If a student needs to cancel last minute, what is the recommended protocol? – Please contact us as far in advance as possible through email.
Who are your teachers? What vetting processes are in place? – Splash UNC teachers are college students attending UNC-Chapel Hill representing a variety of majors and minors. They participate in the program as volunteers and are some of the most engaged and passionate students at the university. Every teacher is required to attend a sexual assault training from the Department of the Protection of Minors. Various teaching workshops are also available for teachers to create fun, well-structured classes. Teachers and program administrators also receive background checks.
Are classes difficult? – Most classes are taught at a beginner level, though some classes are more difficult than others. If a class requires some prior knowledge about a particular subject, it will say so on its registration page. We do not have any sort of GPA or grade requirement to attend.
Is Splash UNC mostly a STEM-based program? – Nope, we offer many types of classes. Humanities courses and even unique courses such as dance, origami, and public speaking are some of our most popular classes! Of course, we do have a great selection of STEM classes as well, taught by college students in STEM majors.
What is your protocol for inclement weather? – Splash UNC events are held rain or shine. In circumstances where snow or tropical storms arise, we will send an email about whether or not we will be canceling/postponing the program. Regardless, please use your best judgement based on conditions in your area for attending.
Can I become involved in the Splash UNC planning process? – Please contact us with your suggestions! We are always looking for ways to improve and expand the program.
Are your classroom buildings wheelchair accessible? – Yes, all buildings are equipped with ramps. Volunteers will be available to guide students if necessary. Please contact us with an specific questions or requests.
